I've experienced this many times and, particularly with folks my own age or older, I cannot fathom how they don't seem to notice the changes the world has gone through is the past 50 years, nor how they seem to feel that it is indeed a bottomless picnic basket. How do they not notice the increasing rarity of encountering other species when the step outside, the salamanders, turtles, bluebirds, what have you.

Another effect I encounter more and more frequently is normal people's actual fear of insects, birds, frogs, wilderness. I don't have a clue how to save something that many humans have no relationship to, that they seem almost happy to have go away.

And there's no taboo like population. Even my most enlightened friends can take offense at the suggestion that one birthed child is more than enough. I try to be firm, but kind, but I think it's the most important part of the discussion and I will never stop bringing it to people's attention as long as I have breath.Ronnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14038098740947686876noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22340423.post-58671483763646946042012-10-13T18:32:39.788+09:002012-10-13T18:32:39.788+09:00Dear Brice and Zot and John,
Thank you very, very...Dear Brice and Zot and John,

Thank you very, very much for reading and responding to my essay.

John, thank you so much for your clarity and your encouragement. Pardon me for not responding sooner to your comments -- I just now found a list of hundreds of un-moderated comments that I had never seen!

Zot and Brice, I am especially grateful for your response -- because I know well that if I was 'full of it' you would both tell me!

Please do not be shy to give me a 'heads-up' when there's something I ought to be paying more attention to! Send links, send news, send advice, send book lists, as you see fit.

Thank you again. I was so happy and so grateful when I looked and saw the comments.

xo
Guttersnipe Dashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17901384555233054816noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22340423.post-72657403001991263272012-10-13T16:36:31.878+09:002012-10-13T16:36:31.878+09:00Sobering, frightening, but very well written. Glo...Sobering, frightening, but very well written. Global warming is caused by our fossil fuel addiction, and as you point out, if there's one thing addicts possess in abundance, it's the capacity for denial. So we go on pretending that our addiction really isn't a problem and that it's not having any side-effects. Just like an alcoholic or a meth head who tells himself he must be fine because he hasn't lost his job . . . yet.

You may be a beginner, but you write well and clearly. You can leave the science to others. What this issue needs more than anything is good messengers, people who can persuade us to break the silence, recognize the problem, and finally do something. I'd say you should keep at this, because refusing to be silent is the only way to break the taboo.FogCityJohnnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22340423.post-43655682892522273672012-10-12T01:05:24.899+09:002012-10-12T01:05:24.899+09:00i hereby declare myself a mobile zone of freedom f...i hereby declare myself a mobile zone of freedom from the ecology taboo. i declare the conversational space around me free of this backward taboo. i don't own any media outlets (not even a bumper for stickers), and i haven't been effective in encouraging others to read, but at least when people are around me they can enjoy a respite from this life-denying taboo. Derek Jensen suggests that industrialized civilization was the wrong turn, and often I agree with him. Ironic, that. Yes, real change is hard. No, we don't have much time. I'll spread this message.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15821604582645483964noreply@blogger.com
